Retro Bayer Leverkusen shirts: from Kirsten and Ballack to the 2024 title
For a long time Bayer Leverkusen were the club that almost won everything. That is exactly what makes the shirts from those years so appealing to collectors, and since 2024 there is finally a league title alongside them. In this collection you'll find original retro Bayer Leverkusen shirts and vintage Bayer Leverkusen shirts, from the adidas shirts of the 1990s to Xabi Alonso's title-winning team.
The 1988 UEFA Cup and the 1993 cup
The first major trophy came in 1988 with the UEFA Cup. The DFB-Pokal followed in 1993. Ulf Kirsten became the club's all-time top scorer with 240 goals in 448 matches. Other club icons include goalkeeper Rüdiger Vollborn, the record appearance holder with 487 matches, and Carsten Ramelow.
The 1990s: Christoph Daum and adidas
Under Christoph Daum, coach from 1996 to 2000, Leverkusen became a fixture at the top of the Bundesliga. The shirts from this period, such as the Bayer Leverkusen 1997/98 shirt, were made by adidas. Ulf Kirsten was the first-choice striker in those years.
2001/02: Ballack, Lúcio and Neverkusen
The 2001/02 season under Klaus Toppmöller is legendary. With Michael Ballack, Lúcio, Zé Roberto and Dimitar Berbatov, Leverkusen were five points clear in the Bundesliga, but lost two of their last three matches and finished second. Schalke 04 won the cup final 4-2, and in the Champions League final Real Madrid were too strong, winning 2-1. That is how the nickname Neverkusen was born. As a result, the adidas home shirt of 2001/02 is one of the most sought-after Leverkusen shirts. Berbatov eventually scored 91 goals for the club.
The 2010s: Kießling and Son
Stefan Kießling became the club's second-highest scorer of all time with 162 goals. Under Sami Hyypiä (2012 to 2014) and Roger Schmidt (2014 to 2017), a young Son Heung-min also played in Leverkusen; his 2013/14 home shirt with number 7 has been in our collection.
Xabi Alonso and the 2024 double
Under Xabi Alonso, coach from 2022 to 2025, Leverkusen won the first league title in the club's history in 2023/24, followed by the DFB-Pokal and, in 2024, their first DFL-Supercup. Florian Wirtz, Granit Xhaka, Victor Boniface and Patrik Schick, the club's third-highest scorer ever with 103 goals, made Leverkusen the best team in Germany. Wirtz's Castore shirt with number 10 is from the 2024/25 season.
