Boca Juniors and La Bombonera

Boca Juniors was founded in 1905 in La Boca, the port district of Buenos Aires. According to legend, the blue and yellow colours come from the flag of a Swedish ship that sailed into the harbour. The club plays at La Bombonera, one of the most famous stadiums in the world, and the Superclásico against River Plate is one of the fiercest derbies in football.

Maradona and the Boca shirt

Diego Maradona wore the Boca shirt in 1981, when he won the league with the club, and at the end of his career from 1995 to 1997. In between he made history at Napoli and with Argentina.

The golden years under Carlos Bianchi

Under coach Carlos Bianchi Boca won the Copa Libertadores in 2000, 2001 and 2003, and in 2000 also beat Real Madrid in the Intercontinental Cup with two goals from Martín Palermo. Juan Román Riquelme was the playmaker and a young Carlos Tevez broke through. Boca played in Nike shirts until 2019; since 2020 the kit supplier has been Adidas. In 2007, with Riquelme in the lead role, Boca won the Copa Libertadores for the sixth time.
