Retro Schalke 04 shirts: from the Eurofighters to Huntelaar

Schalke 04 is the club of the Ruhr: a working-class club with one of the most loyal followings in Europe. For Dutch fans the club is extra special, thanks to coach Huub Stevens and players such as Youri Mulder and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. In this collection you will find original retro Schalke shirts and vintage Schalke 04 shirts in the famous royal blue.

1997: the Eurofighters win the UEFA Cup

The most famous retro Schalke 04 shirt dates from 1997. Under Huub Stevens, a side without big stars reached the UEFA Cup final against Inter. After a 1-0 win at the Parkstadion, thanks to a goal from Marc Wilmots, and a 0-1 defeat at San Siro, Schalke won on penalties. Wilmots scored the decisive spot kick. Jens Lehmann, captain Olaf Thon, Ingo Anderbrügge, Johan de Kock, Martin Max and Youri Mulder became the 'Eurofighters' forever. Shirts and training shirts from the following years, such as those from 1998/99, are also popular with collectors.

2001: Meister der Herzen

In 2001 Schalke moved from the Parkstadion to the new Arena AufSchalke, today's Veltins-Arena. In the final season at the old ground, the club lived through one of the most dramatic days in Bundesliga history. After the last match against Unterhaching, the fans had already been celebrating the title for four minutes when Patrik Andersson scored in stoppage time in Hamburg for Bayern Munich after all. Schalke became 'Meister der Herzen', champions of hearts. With Ebbe Sand, Emile Mpenza, Jörg Böhme, Andreas Möller and Tomasz Hajto, Schalke did win the DFB-Pokal, in 2001 and again in 2002.

Gazprom, Raúl and Huntelaar

From 2007 Gazprom appeared on the shirt, a sponsor that stayed with the club until 2022. In 2010 Raúl and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar came to Gelsenkirchen. With Manuel Neuer in goal, Schalke reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2011 after a 5-2 win away at holders Inter, and under Ralf Rangnick won the DFB-Pokal, beating Duisburg 5-0. A season later Huntelaar was the Bundesliga's top scorer with 29 goals. Ibrahim Afellay, Jeffrey Bruma and Leroy Sané later played in Schalke blue too.

Why a vintage Schalke shirt?

Over the years Schalke have mainly played in Adidas, with a short spell with Umbro between 2018 and 2022. The blue home shirt with white details has barely changed, but every season has its own collar, pattern and sponsor.
