From Rosario to La Masia
Messi grew up in Rosario, Argentina. When he needed growth hormone treatment as a boy, it was Barcelona who paid for it. His first contract was reportedly signed on a napkin in 2000. At the age of thirteen he moved to Barcelona, to the La Masia academy.
#30, #19 and #10 at Barcelona
Messi made his debut in 2004 wearing the number 30. He scored his first goal in 2005, a delicate lob from a Ronaldinho pass. He then wore the 19 for three seasons: shirts with Messi #19 are rare and highly sought after. When Ronaldinho left in 2008, Messi was handed the 10. Under Pep Guardiola, with Xavi and Iniesta alongside him, he won six trophies in a single year in 2009 and the Champions League at Wembley in 2011. In 2012 he scored 91 goals in one calendar year, a world record. In 2015 came another Champions League, together with Luis Suárez and Neymar. In 2021 he said a tearful goodbye. Messi for Argentina
At the 2006 World Cup, a 19-year-old Messi made his debut wearing #19. He later took the 10 and became captain. After losing the 2014 World Cup final to Germany at the Maracanã, revenge followed: the Copa América in 2021, at the Maracanã of all places, and finally the World Cup in Qatar in 2022, after one of the greatest World Cup finals ever against France. PSG and Inter Miami
